Fruit Pirates. None of it is yours
until you're home.

You captain a watermelon. The merchant ships out there get richer the further from home you find them, and everything you take from them sits in your hold until you sail it back to the island. Sink first and it goes down with you.

Fruit Pirates in play: the player's ship under a black sail in the middle of a teal sea at sunset, a merchant under way ahead of it, a line of reef rocks along the horizon, the radar hung at the top of the screen, and the hold and the heat stars at the top left.

How it works

  1. Run one down

W or the up arrow is the throttle and A and D turn you. On a phone the joystick does both. The ship carries its speed through a turn and turns worse the faster it goes, so start the turn early.

  2. Put it on the bow

Space fires a broadside, or the FIRE button on a phone. The cannons take whatever is closest to the front of the ship inside a wide arc, so aiming is a matter of pointing the hull.

  3. Scoop the wreck

A sunk merchant leaves treasure floating for twenty-six seconds. Get near and it comes to you. The hold starts at 150 gold and takes nothing more once it is full.

  4. Get it home

The dock at your island is the only place a haul turns into gold. Sink before you reach it and you lose everything you were carrying, and the Heat you built with it.

Who else is out there

The navy

They come for the notorious

Warships patrol the water away from the island and start hunting you well before they are in range. Heat banked at the dock raises a Notoriety rank, and every rank sends another named officer out after you: Captain Rind, then Commodore Pith, then Captain Zest, then Admiral Bramblewood. Sinking one is permanent.

The Kraken

It does not need to chase you

A leviathan surfaces only in deep water and barely moves. It has 2,400 hull and lobs fans of coral spikes most of the way across the sea. There is never more than one at a time, and it submerges again if you run far enough.

What's aboard

Merchants
Three kinds. A sloop is quick, thin-hulled and worth little. A galleon is slow, takes 130 hull to put down and pays nearly five times as much. Five of them work the sea at any one time.
The hold
150 gold to start with. Cargo Hold takes it to 800 across ten levels. A full hold is a full hold: treasure you sail over after that stays in the water.
Upgrades
Six, bought with banked gold at the port shop: Reinforced Hull, Heavy Shot, Fast Reload, Swift Sails, Cargo Hold and Gunports. Gunports is the one that changes the shape of a fight, taking a broadside from three shots to six.
Heat
A per-run greed meter that rises as you plunder, sink and sail out. High Heat is richer treasure and more hunters, up to roughly twice the loot and nearly twice the danger. It banks at the dock and it is gone if you sink.
Notoriety
Five ranks, Deckhand up to Legend, bought with banked Heat. Each one puts another named officer in the water, and they stay there until you sink them.
The reefs
Thirty-four rock formations, all of them outside the home waters. Ramming one costs hull and nothing else, which makes a reef a place to lose a warship rather than a wall.
The sea
A circle. Sail far enough out and it warns you, then turns you back. Everything gets more dangerous and more valuable the further from the island you take it.
The Admiral
Sinking Admiral Bramblewood banks the run, clears the officer ladder and puts the whole fleet back in the water harder than before. It is a lap marker rather than a finish line.

Get it

Fruit Pirates runs in a browser tab, free, and there is nothing in it to buy.

No account, no advertising, nothing for sale, and no network request once the page has loaded. Your gold, your upgrades, your rank and your lifetime totals sit in one key in the browser you played in and go no further. Nothing in the game is seeded, so every run draws a different sea and there is no run to hand to anyone else.
